New beginning! Prithvi Shaw silences critics with stunning century on Maharashtra debut

NEW DELHI: Prithvi Shaw announced his arrival for Maharashtra in style, scoring a century on debut against Chhattisgarh in the Buchi Babu Tournament 2025 in Chennai on Tuesday. The right-hander, who recently moved from Mumbai, showcased his class after a period marked by form and fitness struggles that had kept him out of several tournaments.Shaw’s hundred came off 122 deliveries and included 14 fours and a six. His innings helped Maharashtra recover after a shaky start. He shared a 71-run opening stand with Sachin Dhas before the side suffered a dramatic collapse, losing four wickets for just 15 runs. The slump saw Chennai Super Kings skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad and Maharashtra captain Ankeet Bawane fall in consecutive overs. Shaw, however, stood firm and stitched a crucial 57-run partnership with Siddharth Mhatre for the fifth wicket to stabilize the innings. The 25-year-old’s move to Maharashtra followed a difficult phase with Mumbai. He was left out of the Ranji Trophy squad and also missed selection for the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Though he was part of Mumbai’s Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy-winning campaign, his returns were modest — 197 runs from nine matches. In addition, Shaw went unsold in last November’s IPL auction for the first time in his career.Shaw last played for India in July 2021 and remains on the fringes of national selection.
