Why PM Modi’s Canada visit in December matters for bilateral ties

Trade deal, energy cooperation and technology partnership top the agenda as India and Canada seek to strengthen strategic ties and double bilateral trade by 2030.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Canada on December 11–12, 2026, with both countries looking to build on improving bilateral ties and deliver concrete outcomes across trade, energy, technology and security.

The visit was announced by the High Commission of India in Ottawa following a telephone conversation between Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. Both leaders agreed to sustain the positive momentum in relations and work towards strengthening their strategic partnership.

Trade deal remains a key priority

One of the key issues expected to feature prominently is the proposed Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA). According to the Canadian Prime Minister’s Office, Modi and Carney reaffirmed their commitment to concluding negotiations on the trade agreement at the earliest opportunity.

The agreement is expected to support efforts to double bilateral trade by 2030, creating opportunities for businesses in both countries and potentially expanding investment across key sectors.

The renewed focus on trade comes as Canada seeks to deepen its commercial engagement with India. Canadian International Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu is leading a delegation of approximately 300 business representatives to India to explore opportunities across industries.

Energy and technology cooperation in focus

Beyond trade, energy, technology, innovation and security are expected to remain central to discussions. Both leaders have highlighted the need for stronger cooperation in areas that could support economic growth and address shared strategic priorities.

During their recent conversation, Modi and Carney also discussed geopolitical instability in the Indo-Pacific and the importance of trusted partners in energy and agriculture.

The emphasis on these sectors reflects the broader potential for India and Canada to expand cooperation beyond traditional trade and investment ties.

Diplomatic engagement gathers pace

The planned visit follows a series of high-level engagements aimed at strengthening relations. Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand recently met Modi and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar in New Delhi, with discussions covering trade, investment, security, energy, technology and people-to-people exchanges.

Anand has also highlighted the longstanding connections between the two countries, which have been strengthened by generations of families, students and entrepreneurs over nearly eight decades of diplomatic relations.

The leaders have agreed to remain in close contact ahead of Modi’s visit, signalling continued diplomatic engagement as both sides work towards shared objectives.

Why the visit matters

Modi’s December visit will be an opportunity for India and Canada to translate renewed diplomatic engagement into measurable economic and strategic outcomes. Progress on CEPA negotiations, closer energy and technology cooperation, and stronger business ties will be key indicators of how far the relationship advances.

With both governments committed to expanding trade and strengthening their strategic partnership, the visit could provide fresh momentum to bilateral relations and help establish a clearer roadmap for cooperation in the years ahead.
