NEW DELHI: Following Rohit Sharma’s Test cricket retirement, former Indian cricketer Madan Lal, who played an influential role in India’s World Cup win in 1983, suggested that Jasprit Bumrah should be considered for the team’s leadership role. With Rohit’s departure creating a leadership gap before India’s ICC World Test Championship series against England in June, the search for a new captain has begun.In his conversation with ANI regarding potential captaincy candidates, Madan Lal stated, “Jasprit Bumrah should get a chance. His first Test as captain was against England in 2022, resulting in a seven-wicket loss in the fifth rescheduled Test.At Perth, during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia, Bumrah led India to a significant 295-run victory, securing a 1-0 lead. This remained the team’s sole win in the series.

The 38-year-old expressed his appreciation to supporters whilst reflecting on his time in the longest cricket format.Since his Test debut against the West Indies in November 2013, Rohit participated in 67 Tests, accumulating 4,301 runs at an average of 40.57, including 12 centuries and 18 half-centuries.
