Who is Prashant Veer? 20-year-old left-armer snapped up by CSK for Rs 14.20 crore at IPL auction

Chennai Super Kings have made a bold statement at the IPL 2026 auction by securing 20-year-old left-arm spinner Prashant Veer for a whopping Rs 14.20 crore. The young allrounder, who initially caught attention playing for Noida Super Kings in the UP T20 League, has impressed with consistent performances this year, particularly in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Veer’s rise has been remarkable. In a hectic few weeks, he travelled between Mumbai and Kolkata, featuring in six matches across just seven days in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Uttar Pradesh’s Under-23 fixtures. He ended the first of those tournaments with 112 runs at a strike rate of 170 and picked up nine wickets at an economy of 6.76, showcasing his value as a genuine allrounder. His performances did not go unnoticed, with CSK inviting him to trials as they looked for a long-term successor to Ravindra Jadeja.

The bidding for Veer was intense. CSK faced stiff competition from Sunrisers Hyderabad, who pushed the price up to Rs 14 crore before Chennai finally claimed the youngster for Rs 14.20 crore. Prior to this, CSK had kicked off their auction by acquiring Akeal Hosein at his base price of Rs 2 crore. This acquisition comes at a time of significant change for the Chennai franchise. In a major IPL 2026 trade, CSK sent star allrounder Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran to Rajasthan Royals in exchange for wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson. With Jadeja gone, CSK were in urgent need of quality spinners. Prashant Veer is expected to fill that gap, offering both spin and batting depth, and potentially becoming a key long-term allrounder for the team. With a purse of Rs 43.40 crore going into the auction, CSK’s strategy of investing heavily in young talent like Veer highlights their intent to rebuild aggressively while remaining a strong force in the IPL.
