Utah: Bomb placed under vehicle fails to detonate; two arrested

Two men were arrested Friday after an incendiary device was discovered under a news media vehicle in Salt Lake City, Utah.The bomb, which “had been lit but failed to function as designed,” did not go off, according to court records cited by CBS affiliate KUTV.Police and fire department bomb squads responded when the suspicious device was found near an occupied building. The FBI later identified two suspects and executed a search warrant at a home in the Magna neighborhood, west of downtown.During the search, neighboring homes were evacuated. Investigators recovered explosives, “explosive-related components,” firearms, illegal narcotics and other paraphernalia. Court records also noted the discovery of at least two hoax weapons of mass destruction.A 58-year-old man and a 31-year-old man were taken into custody and could face charges tied to weapons possession and threats of terrorism, ABC affiliate KTVX reported Sunday, as quoted by AP.Authorities have not released information on a possible motive, and the relationship between the suspects is not yet known.The incident comes as Salt Lake City drew national media attention following last week’s assassination of Turning Point USA co-founder Charlie Kirk.
