Tragic! 114-year-old marathon runner Fauja Singh dies in road accident; Punjab Governor says 'deeply saddened'

Punjab and the global running community are in mourning after news emerged that Fauja Singh, the iconic 114‑year‑old “Turbaned Tornado”, tragically died in a road accident on July 14, 2025, at his home village of Beas Pind near Jalandhar. According to multiple reports, he was struck by an unidentified vehicle while crossing the road at around 3:30 pm, and later died at a private hospital. Born on April 1, 1911, Fauja Singh gained global fame for beginning his marathon journey at age 89, going on to become the oldest person to complete a full marathon, finishing the 2011 Toronto Waterfront Marathon at the age of 100. Known for his unwavering determination, he amassed several age-group records and continued running competitively until he was 101.Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria expressed heartfelt sorrow, calling him a “symbol of resilience” whose loss leaves the state and the world “deeply saddened”.“Deeply saddened by the passing of Sardar Fauja Singh Ji, the legendary marathon runner and symbol of resilience. At 114, he joined me in the ‘Nasha Mukt – Rangla Punjab’ march with unmatched spirit. His legacy will continue to inspire a drug-free Punjab. Om Shanti Om,” Punjab’s Governor posted on X. From his humble beginnings in rural Punjab to becoming a symbol of enduring spirit, Fauja Singh shattered age stereotypes and inspired millions. His legacy will live on through marathons, books, and countless stories of triumph. Though he is no longer with us, his message, that determination knows no age, will continue to resonate.The world bids farewell to a remarkable man whose strides transcended records and touched hearts.
