Sydney Sweeney grilled on social media for hinting at playing James Bond: ‘You're a woman, so no’

Sydney Sweeney hinted that she could be playing James Bond instead of a Bond Girl in the popular franchise, sparking a storm online. Critics dug up her past controversies, including her viral jeans advertisement that got her involved with Donald Trump and MAGA supporters.Speaking to Variety, the Euphoria star said she’d “have more fun as James Bond” while addressing speculation that she could be joining the next instalment of the spy franchise. “I can’t… I don’t know… to be honest, I don’t know all the Bond rumours,” she said.“I’ve always been a huge fan of the franchise, and I’m excited and curious to see what they do with it. Depends on the script. I think I’d have more fun as James Bond.”

Why is the internet after Sydney Sweeney?

Many social media users claimed it was ironic for an actress with conservative support to talk about taking on a role traditionally played by a male protagonist. Gender debates and sexual preferences are quite sensitive topics among GOP supporters, who strongly favour heterosexuality and traditional binary norms. The backlash follows earlier uproar over Sweeney’s 2025 American Eagle advertisement, which featured the line: “Genes are passed down from parents to offspring… My jeans are blue.” Critics said the campaign promoted eugenics ideas, leading to a heated debate about race and beauty standards. The company clarified the ad was purely about denim, saying, “Her jeans. Her story. We’ll continue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence, their way.”

How is Sweeney involved with Trump?

The row deepened when records showed Sweeney was registered as a Republican in Florida. Soon after, Donald Trump came to her defence, calling her “a registered Republican” and praising the advert as “the HOTTEST ad out there.” The GOP leader’s comments sent American Eagle’s stock soaring by nearly 20 per cent.

Mother’s birthday party controversy

Sweeney has largely avoided political discussions, though she once urged fans to “stop making assumptions” after photos from her mother’s birthday party showed guests wearing Make America Great Again (MAGA) hats. “Honestly, I feel like nothing I say can help the conversation,” she told GQ later. “It’s been turning into a wildfire, and nothing I can say will take it back to the correct track.”
