Sexuality Is Grey: Avengres Doomsday Star Alan Cumming Opens Up About Being Mislabeled As Gay, Says He Prefers ‘Queer’

Alan Cumming is in the news after his casting was confirmed in one of the most anticipated movies, Avengers: Doomsday. While fans have been discussing his return as the X-Men character Nightcrawler in the event film from the Russo Brothers, the actor took time to discuss his sexuality on his website. He also spoke about being mislabeled as gay.

Cumming shared that he prefers to be labelled as queer over gay as it’s more “all-encompassing”. “It doesn’t necessarily have to do with what you do with the contents of your underpants. It’s more of a sort of sensibility as well. I quite like that,” he expressed.

The actor and The Traitors host came out as bisexual in 1998. He is married to artist Grant Shaffer. They tied the knot in 2007. He has also been romantically involved with actor Saffron Burrows and was married to Outlander actress Hilary Lyon for eight years between 1985-1993.

“I think my sexuality and most people’s sexuality is gray. I am married to a man. I have a healthy sexual appetite and a healthy imagination. I also have an attraction to women. I’ve never lost it, actually. I’ve always been attracted to both sexes, and whether I act on it or not is not anyone’s business,” Cumming shared.

Cumming also spoke about being unabashedly queer in his show The Traitors, a murder mystery game. He described it as celebrating the queer and the trans community for what they are. “There’s me at the center of it, being super queer with all my crazy outfits. Two of the winners this year are queer people, and that’s so lovely. I really did push to have a better representation in the show, and that’s certainly worked,” Cumming said.
