Qatar Post’s PosTransfer sends money to UPI-enabled bank accounts in India within minutes
Indian expatriates in Qatar now have a new and faster way to send money home, with Qatar Post launching a UPI-powered remittance service that enables direct transfers to eligible bank accounts in India.
The service, called PosTransfer, was launched on August 15 by Qatar Post in collaboration with India Post, the Universal Postal Union (UPU), and NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL).
The initiative aims to simplify Qatar–India remittances, especially for the large Indian community in Qatar, many of whom regularly send money to support families back home.
How does PosTransfer work?
Customers in Qatar can initiate a transfer by visiting a participating Qatar Post outlet.
At the counter, they must provide the beneficiary’s verified UPI ID and complete the transaction. The funds are then processed through the UPI infrastructure and credited directly to the recipient’s UPI-linked bank account in India.
Transfers are typically completed within minutes.
Importantly, recipients in India do not need to visit any physical location to collect the money. The amount is deposited directly into their bank account.
Unlike using UPI for merchant payments abroad, PosTransfer uses UPI as the underlying infrastructure for cross-border remittances from Qatar to India.
How much does PosTransfer cost?
Qatar Post is currently charging a flat fee of QR15 per transaction. The postal operator has also said it is offering competitive exchange rates based on prevailing market conditions and may introduce promotional offers in the future.
The service is expected to be particularly useful for small and frequent remittances, including regular transfers made by workers supporting families in India.
Who can use the service?
The service is available to customers in Qatar who wish to send money to beneficiaries with UPI-enabled bank accounts in India.
Qatar is home to a large Indian expatriate population, with more than 800,000 Indians residing in the country. Remittances form a vital financial link between the two nations, with workers regularly sending money home.
PosTransfer adds another option alongside banks, exchange houses, and digital remittance platforms.
What is India’s role?
India Post is part of the partnership behind PosTransfer, while NIPL provides the technical integration with India’s UPI ecosystem.
India Post’s involvement is significant due to its extensive nationwide network, which reaches even smaller towns and rural areas.
The collaboration combines the physical reach of postal systems in both countries with India’s digital payments infrastructure.
This allows customers in Qatar to initiate transfers at Qatar Post outlets, while recipients in India receive funds directly in their bank accounts.
Is this the same as using UPI abroad?
Not exactly. While UPI has expanded internationally in recent years to enable payments at select overseas merchants, PosTransfer serves a different purpose.
It is designed specifically for cross-border remittances from Qatar to India.
Customers do not use a UPI app or scan a QR code abroad. Instead, the transaction is initiated at Qatar Post outlets, with UPI used behind the scenes to complete the transfer to the beneficiary’s bank account in India.
Why is the service important?
The launch marks another step in the global expansion of India’s digital payments ecosystem.
For the Indian community in Qatar, it offers a convenient and reliable new channel to send money home, while ensuring recipients in India receive funds directly in their bank accounts.
Qatar Post currently operates 18 branches across the country, including locations in industrial and residential areas. The organisation has also indicated plans to expand its reach closer to communities, particularly in areas with high concentrations of workers.
For India, the initiative further extends UPI’s role beyond domestic payments into cross-border financial services.
More broadly, the partnership highlights how traditional postal networks can be integrated with modern digital payment systems to better serve migrant workers and their families.
As remittances continue to shift toward digital channels, services like PosTransfer are expected to make cross-border money transfers faster, more accessible, and more efficient.
