NEW DELHI: As the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 reaches its most thrilling stage — the knock-outs, former Australian all-rounder Shane Watson reflects on his cherished memories of this prestigious event.
Watson, who never played in Pakistan during his international career, fondly recalls his 2019 Pakistan Super League (PSL) experience with the Quetta Gladiators. “One of the most memorable weeks of my life was in Pakistan. The support we received was overwhelming,” he wrote in the latest ICC release. Pakistan’s long-standing passion for cricket was evident as fans welcomed world-class players with open arms, reveling in the joy of the game.
His Champions Trophy story began in 2002 when he first broke into the Australian team, facing a star-studded lineup featuring the likes of Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath, and Ricky Ponting. “I was intimidated by their skill and knew I had a lot of work to do before I could match their level,” he admitted.

However, by 2006, Watson had cemented his place in the squad. The Champions Trophy that year became a defining moment for him as he played a crucial role in Australia’s victory, scoring an unbeaten 57 in the final while opening alongside Adam Gilchrist. “That was the moment I truly felt I belonged,” he said. “It was the start of me being at my best as a fast-bowling all-rounder.”
In 2009, Watson’s contributions were even more remarkable. With Australia undergoing a transition, Ricky Ponting’s leadership was instrumental in guiding the team to another triumph. Watson played a starring role, especially in the semi-final against England, where he remained unbeaten on 136 in a match-winning partnership with Ponting. “Batting with one of my childhood heroes in such a crucial game was unforgettable,” he recalled.
The final against New Zealand saw Watson etch his name in history, completing both his century and the tournament victory with a six. “That moment was magical — something every cricketer dreams of,” he said.
While trophies and accolades adorn Watson’s home, one item stands out as his most treasured possession — the watch he received for being named Man of the Match in the 2009 final. “It’s one of the most special things I own,” he shared. “Every time I see it, it brings back incredible memories.”
As the Champions Trophy continues to create new memories for today’s players, Watson hopes they will one day look back on their experiences with the same fondness. “This tournament has given me some of my greatest cricketing moments. I hope the players competing today will cherish their time here just as much.”
