Nvidia chooses China’s Hesai for lidar sensors in Hyperion autonomous driving platform

Hesai Group, the world’s largest maker of vehicle lidar sensors, has struck a partnership with US chip giant Nvidia to help develop an autonomous driving platform, as the Shanghai-based firm pushes its global expansion to serve more international marques.

Hesai said on Tuesday that its light detection and ranging sensors – which use laser beams to measure distances to objects – would be supplied to support Nvidia’s Drive Hyperion platform, which is designed to meet the level 4 (L4) self-driving standard.

The company added that the lidar sensors selected for the platform were ready for mass production.

The company also said a plant in Bangkok, its first factory outside mainland China, would begin operations at the start of 2027.

“Hesai is among the top beneficiaries of the accelerated development of autonomous driving technology in China and other markets,” said Zhou Ling, a hedge fund manager at Shanghai Shiva Investment. “A surge in its sales in the coming few years is expected since the market has seen positive steps taken to commercialise autonomous driving technology.”
