Oranje bounce back from Japan draw with statement FIFA World Cup 2026 victory to take control of Group FThe Netherlands produced one of their most complete performances of FIFA World Cup 2026 so far, dismantling Sweden 5-1 at Houston Stadium to secure their first victory of the tournament and officially book their place in the Round of 32.After being held to a 2-2 draw by Japan in their opening Group F fixture, Ronald Koeman’s side responded emphatically with a ruthless display of attacking efficiency. Brian Brobbey and Cody Gakpo each scored twice before substitute Crysencio Summerville added a late fifth as the Dutch moved to the top of the group with four points and a commanding goal difference advantage. For Sweden, who had arrived in Houston full of confidence after thrashing Tunisia 5-1 in their opener, it was a sobering evening. Graham Potter’s side created chances throughout the contest and finished with more shots than the Netherlands, but a combination of wasteful finishing and an inspired performance from goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen ultimately proved costly.

Brobbey and Gakpo put the Dutch in complete control

The Netherlands could hardly have wished for a better start. Just five minutes into the contest, Cody Gakpo burst down the left flank and exposed space behind the Swedish defence before drilling a low cross across the face of goal. Brian Brobbey anticipated the delivery perfectly, arriving at the far post to convert from close range and hand the Oranje an early advantage.

Sweden attempted to respond through Alexander Isak and Dejan Kulusevski, but the Dutch remained dangerous whenever they transitioned forward. Their second goal arrived in the 17th minute and again came through Brobbey. Denzel Dumfries surged forward from the right and fired a dangerous diagonal pass into the penalty area. A slight deflection wrong-footed the Swedish defence and Brobbey reacted quickest, poking the loose ball beyond Kristoffer Nordfeldt to complete his brace.

Despite trailing by two goals, Sweden enjoyed lengthy spells of possession and territory for the remainder of the first half. Isak, Viktor Gyökeres and Emil Forsberg all found promising positions, but Verbruggen repeatedly denied them with a series of important saves that preserved the Dutch advantage heading into the interval.

Any hopes of a Swedish comeback were effectively extinguished immediately after the restart.Just two minutes into the second half, Dumfries again turned provider. Finding space down the right side, the full-back delivered an inviting cross that picked out Gakpo, who guided a composed volley into the bottom corner to make it 3-0.

Sweden fight back but Verbruggen stands firm

To their credit, Sweden refused to surrender. In the 59th minute they finally found a breakthrough after winning possession in midfield and launching a rapid transition. Isak drove forward before threading a perfectly weighted through-ball into the path of Anthony Elanga, who calmly slotted beyond Verbruggen to reduce the deficit to 4-1.

The goal sparked Sweden’s best period of the match. Potter’s side pushed forward aggressively, committing numbers into attack and forcing the Netherlands deeper into their own half. Isak became the focal point of almost every Swedish move, while Kulusevski repeatedly drifted inside from wide areas looking to unlock openings.Sweden ultimately finished the contest with 20 shots compared to the Netherlands’ 12 and registered nine efforts on target. However, Verbruggen delivered one of the standout goalkeeping performances of the tournament so far, making seven saves, including a close-range stop from Gyökeres and multiple interventions to deny Isak.

As the pressure increased, Koeman responded by introducing additional defensive reinforcements and shifting the Dutch into a more compact shape. Virgil van Dijk and Stefan de Vrij dealt comfortably with Sweden’s increasingly desperate crosses and long-range efforts, frustrating the Scandinavians as the clock ticked down.

Summerville completes statement victory as Group F picture changes

Any lingering Swedish hopes disappeared in the closing stages. In the 89th minute, substitute Crysencio Summerville collected possession outside the penalty area, shifted onto his stronger foot and curled a superb strike into the top corner to complete a memorable evening for the Oranje.

The final statistics underlined the unusual nature of the contest. Sweden enjoyed 48 per cent possession, outshot the Netherlands 20-12 and forced Verbruggen into seven saves, while Nordfeldt was required to make only one. Yet the Dutch converted five of their seven efforts on target, demonstrating a level of clinical finishing that Sweden could not match. The result dramatically reshapes Group F. The Netherlands move to the top of the standings on four points with a healthy +4 goal difference after scoring seven goals across their opening two matches. Sweden remain second on three points despite seeing the substantial goal difference they built against Tunisia wiped away. For Koeman and the Netherlands, qualification for the Round of 32 is now secured and attention can begin to shift towards finishing top of the group. Sweden’s fate remains in their own hands, but Potter’s side will need a response against Japan on the final matchday after suffering their first setback of the tournament.
