NCDEX launches India’s first rainfall-linked futures contract, allowing traders and businesses to hedge against monsoon uncertainty as weather risks increasingly impact the economy.
Mumbai’s rainfall is set to become a tradable asset as India prepares to launch its first weather futures product, marking a major shift in how the country manages climate and monsoon-related risks.
The cash-settled futures contract, introduced by the National Commodity & Derivatives Exchange (NCDEX), will be based on rainfall deviation data compiled by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The move is designed to help businesses, farmers, traders and financial participants hedge against unpredictable weather patterns.
The launch comes at a time when monsoon uncertainty is increasingly becoming an economic risk. India last month forecast below-average monsoon rains for 2026 — the first such projection in three years, triggering concerns over agricultural output, inflation and broader economic growth in Asia’s third-largest economy.
The futures contract will not involve physical delivery of rainfall. Instead, settlements will be based on the difference between actual rainfall and predefined benchmark levels, allowing market participants to trade expectations around weather outcomes.
For sectors ranging from agriculture and insurance to commodities and energy, rainfall variability can have a significant impact on revenues and costs. Analysts say weather-linked financial instruments could offer a new layer of protection as climate volatility intensifies.
Globally, weather derivatives have existed for decades in markets such as the United States and Europe, where companies hedge risks linked to temperature, snowfall and rainfall. India’s move reflects growing efforts to develop financial tools around climate-linked disruptions.
With monsoon rains accounting for a large share of India’s agricultural activity and rural consumption patterns, market observers see weather futures as a potentially important instrument in the country’s evolving financial ecosystem.
