Cars and buildings damaged in Spain

A magnitude-5 earthquake struck near the southern Spanish city of Granada early Saturday, damaging homes and cars but causing no reported injuries, authorities said. The earthquake hit the metropolitan area of Alhendín shortly after 1 a.m. local time (0000 GMT), with tremors felt across parts of the region.Television footage showed debris scattered across streets and damage to several cars, while emergency services rescued people from some damaged buildings.Authorities also checked the historic Alhambra palace, one of Granada’s best-known landmarks, for possible damage. Antonio Sanz, Andalusia’s top emergency official, said the site had not been affected.“There is no serious structural damage, no serious material damage and there are no casualties,” Sanz said. He added that the Alhambra had “not been affected in any way.”The quake came on the same day as a magnitude-7.7 earthquake off eastern Indonesia, which killed at least 47 people, collapsed buildings and triggered landslides. A tsunami warning issued after the Indonesia quake was later lifted.
