Josh Inglis shines on Test debut with fastest century since 2013

Josh Inglis made a remarkable Test debut for Australia against Sri Lanka, scoring 102 runs from 94 balls on Day 2 of the first Test in Galle on Thursday.
His century came in just 90 balls, making it the second-fastest debut Test hundred in cricket history. Only India’s Shikhar Dhawan achieved it faster, reaching the milestone in 85 balls against Australia in 2013 at Mohali.
Inglis reached his century with an elegant back-foot shot for three runs. His innings ended shortly after when he was caught at cover, having scored 102 from 94 deliveries while trying to maintain the attacking momentum as Australia approached 600.
Fastest Test centuries on debut:

  • Shikhar Dhawan (India) – 85 balls vs Australia (2013)
  • Josh Inglis (Australia) – 90 balls vs Sri Lanka (2025)
  • Dwayne Smith (West Indies) – 93 balls vs South Africa (2003)

The 29-year-old Western Australia player became the third Australian to score a century in the innings. Earlier, Usman Khawaja completed his first Test double century with 232 runs, while Steve Smith contributed 141.
Inglis’s achievement highlighted an interesting pattern in Australian cricket. The last three Australian cricketers to score debut Test centuries all represented Western Australia – Adam Voges against West Indies in 2015, Shaun Marsh against Sri Lanka in 2011, and Marcus North against South Africa in 2009.
The Yorkshire-born cricketer received his baggy green cap from Australian Test legend Geoff Marsh on Wednesday.
