Inmate boasted after fatal prison attack on singer Ian Watkins, prosecutors tell UK court
Rico Gedel allegedly stabbed former Welsh singer Ian Watkins to death in HMP Wakefield with a homemade blade, boasting about his “fame” afterward. Prosecutors claim Gedel and Samuel Dodsworth planned the attack, with CCTV showing Gedel entering Watkins’ cell shortly before the stabbing. Watkins, serving time for child sex offenses, had faced prior threats.

Jurors at Leeds Crown Court were told that Rico Gedel, accused of murdering former Welsh singer and songwriter Ian Watkins inside HMP Wakefield, allegedly boasted about his “fame” after the fatal prison attack.According to the prosecution, Gedel stabbed Watkins with a homemade blade inside a prison cell at the high-security men’s prison on October 11, inflicting severe injuries to his head and neck. Medical staff attempted to save Watkins after prison officers spotted blood on his clothing and rushed to the scene.Prosecutor Tom Storey KC told jurors that Gedel launched the attack shortly after inmates on B Wing were released from their cells around 9 am. CCTV footage shown in court allegedly captured Gedel entering Watkins’ cell and leaving roughly 20 seconds later. The prosecution claims Gedel later handed the improvised weapon to fellow inmate Samuel Dodsworth, who allegedly concealed it under his clothing. Prosecutors argue the pair planned the attack together, although Gedel is accused of carrying out the stabbing himself. Both men face charges of murder and possession of a weapon inside prison.Jurors were also told that Gedel appeared “perky” after his arrest. According to the prosecution, he told prison officers escorting him away that they “could be talking to someone famous.” Storey further alleged that Gedel shouted, “Have a good night’s sleep, Watkins lad,” while passing the area where medics were attempting to save the victim.Watkins had been serving a 29-year sentence for child sex offences at the time of his death. Prosecutors described him as a high-profile inmate who had previously faced threats from other prisoners. The court also heard claims that Gedel resented what he believed was favourable treatment given to sex offenders in prison.Witnesses described chaotic scenes following the attack. Two maintenance workers reportedly saw Watkins briefly emerge from his cell wearing a bloodstained T-shirt before prison staff intervened. Officers attempted first aid, including applying pressure to a deep wound on his neck, while medical assistance was requested.Watkins later collapsed onto his bed and lost consciousness. Paramedics performed CPR, but he was pronounced dead shortly after 10.15 am.The prosecution also told the court that Gedel had been transferred to the same prison wing as Watkins and Dodsworth the day before the killing and was placed in the cell adjacent to Watkins before the incident.
