India’s automobile retail market recorded its best-ever June performance in 2026, with vehicle registrations rising 21.83 per cent year-on-year (YoY) to 2,557,234 units, according to the latest data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA). Retail sales also edged up 1.03 per cent compared with May, reflecting sustained consumer demand across vehicle segments.
The industry body said two-wheelers, three-wheelers, passenger vehicles and commercial vehicles all posted their highest-ever June retail registrations, making it a landmark month for the Indian auto sector.
FADA President C S Vigneshwar said June 2026 marked a historic milestone for the industry, with every major vehicle category registering record June sales. He added that the performance reflects resilient consumer demand despite seasonal challenges.
Passenger vehicles lead the growth
Passenger vehicle (PV) retail sales emerged as the biggest growth driver, rising 28.63 per cent YoY and 2.05 per cent month-on-month (MoM) to 410,853 units.
A key milestone during the month was the rapid adoption of cleaner mobility. The combined share of CNG, hybrid and electric passenger vehicles crossed 40 per cent for the first time, reaching 40.35 per cent. Electric passenger vehicle sales also touched a record 31,823 units.
However, FADA flagged rising inventory levels, with passenger vehicle stock increasing to 32–34 days, above the recommended level. The association urged automakers to align wholesale dispatches with retail demand during the monsoon season to prevent dealer inventory from piling up.
Two-wheelers and commercial vehicles remain strong
Two-wheeler retail sales climbed 21.22 per cent YoY to 1,828,458 units, although they declined 0.89 per cent from May. FADA attributed the sequential decline primarily to delayed and uneven monsoon progress, which affected rural demand.
The electric two-wheeler segment also achieved a significant milestone, with EVs accounting for 10.60 per cent of total two-wheeler retail sales for the first time.
Commercial vehicle sales increased 16.88 per cent YoY to 90,972 units, with rural markets outperforming urban centres. Rural commercial vehicle sales grew 21.63 per cent, supported by infrastructure activity and improving demand.
Meanwhile, three-wheeler retail sales rose 16.20 per cent YoY to 120,889 units, while tractor sales jumped 25.31 per cent to 100,818 units, marking the second-best June performance on record.
EV momentum continues
Total electric vehicle sales across all categories reached 306,220 units during June, underlining the continued expansion of India’s EV market and growing consumer acceptance of electric mobility.
Dealers remain optimistic
Looking ahead, dealer sentiment remains positive. According to FADA, 51.24 per cent of dealers expect retail sales to grow in July, while 66.17 per cent anticipate stronger demand during the July–September quarter.
Additionally, 38.31 per cent of dealers have revised their FY27 retail outlook upward after the industry posted 15.35 per cent YoY growth in the first quarter of the fiscal year. However, FADA cautioned that deficient monsoon rainfall and rising inventory levels remain key risks for the coming months.
