India A vs Sri Lanka A: Prabhsimran Singh's costly blunder sparks controversy; furious Ruturaj Gaikwad questions decision

NEW DELHI: A moment of high drama and controversy unfolded during the Tri-Nation A Series clash between India A and Sri Lanka A at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium on Tuesday, with India A left fuming over a run-out decision that could have dramatically altered the course of the match. The incident occurred in the 42nd over of Sri Lanka A’s chase when Vipraj Nigam bowled a length delivery outside off stump to Chamika Karunaratne. The batter dabbed the ball towards backward point and set off for a quick single, only to be sent back midway. As Karunaratne scrambled to regain his ground, a throw came flying in towards the wicketkeeper’s end. To the naked eye, it appeared to be a direct hit and Karunaratne looked well short of his crease.India A players immediately erupted in celebration, convinced they had pulled off a crucial run-out at a critical stage of the chase. However, the drama was only beginning. The third umpire was called into action and replays revealed that wicketkeeper Prabhsimran Singh had inadvertently disturbed the stumps before the incoming throw made contact with them. Under the laws of the game, the run-out could not stand because the bails had already been dislodged before the ball struck the stumps. As a result, Karunaratne was adjudged not out.The decision sparked animated reactions from the Indian camp. Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad was visibly unhappy and was seen engaged in a lengthy discussion with the on-field umpire. The Indian players appeared frustrated not only by the outcome but also by how quickly the decision was reached.India believed the direct hit should have counted and that Karunaratne, who was outside his crease, would have been comfortably run out had the stumps remained intact.
