Harry Brook named England's new white-ball captain

England have ushered in a new era in white-ball cricket, naming 26-year-old Harry Brook as their new limited-overs captain following Jos Buttler’s resignation in the wake of a disastrous ICC Champions Trophy 2025 campaign. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed the appointment on Monday, April 7.
Buttler, who led England to the 2022 T20 World Cup title, stepped down after the team failed to register a single win at the Champions Trophy, capping off a stretch of disappointing results at major ICC events since their 2019 ODI World Cup triumph.

Brook, a mainstay in England’s batting setup since 2022 and currently ranked No. 2 in the ICC Test batting rankings, has long been seen as a natural leader. He captained England in Buttler’s absence during a series against Australia last year and previously led the U19 side at the 2018 World Cup.
“It’s a real honour to be named England’s white-ball captain,” Brook was quoted as saying by the ECB.

“Ever since I was a kid playing cricket at Burley in Wharfedale, I dreamed of representing Yorkshire, playing for England, and maybe one day leading the team.”
Brook also expressed gratitude to those who shaped his journey: “I want to thank my family and coaches who’ve supported me every step of the way… I wouldn’t be in this position without them.”

Brook’s first assignment as skipper will be a home series against West Indies starting May 29, followed by matches against South Africa in September.
