Google, the California-headquartered tech major, announced the opening of Ananta, one of Google’s largest offices globally, at Mahadevapura, in the outskirts of Bengaluru on Wednesday (February 19, 2025).

The 1.6-million-sq-ft building, Ananta (infinite or limitless in Sanskrit) is built by Bagmane Tech Park over six years. And it was styled and readied for Google in another 11 months.

The new facility can seat upwards of 5,000 techies and the company currently has around 10,000 employees in India, probably the largest employee base outside its home country.

The announcement was another major milestone in Google’s ongoing commitment to India and was part of the company’s ongoing efforts to build with and for India and the world, said Anand Rangarajan, vice-president, product, Google Deepmind.

Commenting on Google’s increasing focus on India, he said, “Technology is advancing rapidly and users and businesses are adopting it very swiftly. Google is spearheading these technology advancementments through research, development, partnerships and deployments. No where are these technology shifts more palpable than in India.’‘

According to him, India has always been a special opportunity for Google, not just to reach our products and platforms to millions of users in the country in their own languages, but also to have them shaped by Indian ingenuity.

He further said, Ananta would enable Google to deliver world-class products, foster deeper partnerships with customers, and continue to focus on solving the most complex challenges facing millions of users, businesses, startups in India and around the world. Ananta may house teams from various Google units such as Android, Search, Play, Pay, Cloud, Maps, and Google Deepmind etc.

Preeti Lobana, Google’s country manager and VP for India said the country has always played the role of a strategic nerve centre, a beating heart, in the tech discourse — this was evident in the thriving startup and app ecosystems, the digital public infrastructure that’s transforming life for hundreds of millions of Indians, and the depth and diversity of Indian creators.

Google has completed two decades of operations in India. The company has played a role in facilitating transformation in the country through AI-powered flood forecasting, specialised AI models to catch tuberculosis early, and helping millions of people join the formal economy with Google Pay, to name a few.
