Exclusive | Regal joins Hong Kong developers, hoteliers to offer free lodging to Tai Po fire’s victims

Regal Hotels International will offer free lodging at a dozen of its hotels across Hong Kong to the victims of Wednesday’s Tai Po fire, as it joins other hoteliers and corporate donors in rushing to the aid of the city’s worst blaze in seven decades.

The hotel will make 160 rooms freely available to those affected by the Tai Po fire for two weeks, a spokeswoman said, citing instructions from the hotel’s vice-chairman Poman Lo. The rooms will be sourced from Regal’s 12 properties across the city, under the Regal, Regala and iClub brands, she said.

The hotels, some of which are pet-friendly, will also offer complimentary meals, she said.

Regal joined several of Hong Kong’s real estate developers and hoteliers in offering their property, as thousands of city residents were made homeless by a fire that burned through seven apartment blocks at Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po. The death toll climbed to 75 on Friday morning, with several hundred residents still missing.

Sun Hung Kai Properties, Hong Kong’s largest property developer by market value, donated HK$20 million (US$2.6 million) towards emergency support and offered 160 rooms in its Imperial hotel chain for free to the victims.

Sino Group and its philanthropic arm Ng Ting Fong Charitable Foundation offered HK$20 million in donations and 160 rooms in three hotels. Sino also postponed the sales launch of 150 flats at its One Park Place in Yau Tong. New World Development also delayed the sales of 63 units at the Austin Bohemian project in Yau Ma Tei.
