Emory University shooting: Suspect killed, officer injured - What we know so far

At least one person was killed and a police officer injured in the shooting reported near the Atlanta campus of Emory University and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Georgia on Friday.

At approximately 4 pm on Friday, Emory University, which houses the CDC headquarters, issued an alert stating “active shooter” at the campus CVS, instructing to “RUN, HIDE, FIGHT. Avoid the area.” The incident occurred at the CVS in Emory Point on Clifton Road, Fox 5 Atlanta reported.Aerial surveillance revealed numerous damaged police vehicles, some with fluid leaks. A substantial law enforcement presence responded to the location.According to eyewitnesses speaking to local media, gunfire erupted in the vicinity of the Emory Point CVS, situated near the university’s Atlanta campus and the CDC’s Roybal facility.

How the shooting unfolded

The initial emergency call was received at 4.50 pm, as confirmed by Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum, which triggered a coordinated response from multiple law enforcement agencies, Ktvu reported.Upon reaching the CVS at Emory Point, law enforcement discovered a critically injured DeKalb County officer. The wounded officer, whose identity remains undisclosed, was immediately transported for medical treatment.Law enforcement personnel conducted a swift search of the premises and located the assailant on the second floor with gunshot wounds. Georgia’s governor, Brian Kemp, issued a statement saying: “Twice this week, deranged criminals have targeted innocent Georgians,” connecting this incident to the mass shooting at Fort Stewart military base in south-east Georgia on Wednesday, the Guardian reported.“Each time, brave first responders rushed toward the danger to subdue the shooter and save lives, reminding us of just how crucial they are. Marty, the girls, and I are thankful for all those who answer the call to serve and who protect their fellow Georgians. We ask that you join us in holding them in our prayers, along with those harmed this evening near the CDC center.”Brandy Giraldo, the chief operating officer of the General Muir deli, reported that staff members heard consecutive gunshots. “It sounded like fireworks going off, one right after the other,” she said.
