Chinese studio behind Black Myth: Wukong plans new game featuring Taoist ghost hunter

The Chinese video game studio behind the global hit Black Myth: Wukong, which played a role in shifting Beijing’s attitude on the gaming industry, has begun developing a new title featuring a Taoist ghost hunter from Chinese folklore.

Hangzhou-based Game Science, whose Wukong featured the Monkey King from the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West, said it had started developing a follow-up title called Black Myth: Zhong Kui. The announcement was made at Gamescom 2025 in Cologne, Germany.

Feng Ji, the studio’s founder, said the new title would feature “a new hero, new gameplay, new visuals, new technology, and a new story”, even though it would still be a single player console game.

A short video demonstration of the game had received more than 9 million views on Chinese game fan platform Bilibili as of Wednesday afternoon.

Black Myth: Zhong Kui was also one of the most searched terms on Chinese social media Weibo on Wednesday, with more than 300 million people discussing the topic.
