CDC deputy director Jennifer Shuford to exit role after midterms amid vaccine policy changes: Report

Jennifer A. Shuford, MD, MPH, is deputy director and chief medical officer of the CDC

Jennifer Shuford, deputy director and chief medical officer of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), is set to leave the Trump administration after next week’s midterm elections, the Washington Post reported on Monday, citing sources. Her reported departure comes amid changes to the administration’s vaccine policy, including President Donald Trump’s proposal to require manufacturers to split certain childhood vaccinations into five separate doses. The reason behind Shuford’s exit remains unclear. According to the report, one person linked her decision to a family health issue, while another suggested she had disagreements with the administration’s approach to vaccination.Shuford, a former Texas health commissioner, joined the CDC in April alongside several senior appointments, including former deputy surgeon general Erica Schwartz, healthcare executive Sean Slovenski and Food and Drug Administration official Sara Brenner.Trump’s proposed changes to childhood vaccinations align with a longstanding objective of Health Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr, who has promoted claims linking vaccines to autism despite extensive scientific evidence disproving such a connection.Neither the CDC nor the White House have confirmed on the development.
