BigBasket co-founder Hari Menon has stepped down as chief executive officer of the Tata-backed online grocery platform, with the company appointing former Amazon executive Amit Nanda as his successor as competition intensifies in India’s fast-growing quick commerce market.
Nanda, who spent more than 11 years at Amazon India in a range of leadership roles, will take over the top job at BigBasket and lead the company’s next phase of growth, including efforts to strengthen its position in quick commerce.
Menon and fellow co-founder Vipul Parekh will continue to serve on the board and mentor the new leadership team, the company said on Tuesday.
Leadership transition at a crucial juncture
The leadership transition comes at a pivotal moment for BigBasket as it faces mounting competition from rivals including Blinkit, Swiggy Instamart, Zepto, Flipkart Minutes, Amazon Now and Reliance’s JioMart in a sector that has rapidly transformed India’s online retail landscape.
Having built BigBasket from the ground up into one of India’s largest online grocery platforms, Menon said Nanda’s experience in scaling businesses and understanding consumer behaviour made him well suited to lead the company into its next chapter.
“His deep understanding of consumers, strong track record of building and scaling businesses, and extensive experience across e-commerce and consumer sectors make him uniquely positioned to lead BigBasket for its journey ahead,” Menon said in a statement.
Amazon veteran takes the helm
Nanda joins BigBasket after serving as Director of Selling Partner Services at Amazon India. His appointment is notable given Amazon’s own growing ambitions in quick commerce through its Amazon Now offering, which is seeking to challenge established players in the segment.
“I am incredibly excited to join BigBasket and build upon the phenomenal trust it has established with millions of consumers across India,” Nanda said. “Combining BigBasket’s customer-first values with the trusted legacy of the Tata Group creates a strong foundation for the future.”
The executive overhaul is part of a broader management reshuffle at the company in recent months. Earlier this month, BigBasket elevated company veteran Seshu Kumar Tirumala to the role of chief operating officer, entrusting him with leading operations as the company scales its quick commerce business.
In April, the company also appointed former Google Pay executive Arpit Jaiswal as chief growth officer, strengthening its leadership bench as it seeks profitable expansion amid rising competition.
Quick commerce race gathers pace
India’s quick commerce sector has emerged as one of the country’s fastest-growing consumer internet segments, expanding into an estimated $11.5 billion market within just five years. The industry has attracted aggressive investments from both established e-commerce firms and specialised rapid-delivery startups, intensifying the battle for market share.
BigBasket, which was acquired by Tata Digital in 2021, has been expanding beyond traditional grocery deliveries to keep pace with changing consumer preferences. Last year, the company announced plans to roll out its 10-minute food delivery service nationwide by the end of fiscal year 2026.
