Babar Azam slapped with heavy fine; ICC punish Pakistan batter for code of conduct breach

Pakistan batter Babar Azam was fined on Tuesday by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for breaching the ICC code of conduct during the third match of Pakistan’s recently concluded ODI series against Sri Lanka. “Pakistan’s batting stalwart Babar Azam has been fined 10 percent of his match fee for a Level 1 ICC Code of Conduct breach,” the ICC said in a statement. Azam breached Article 2.2 of the ICC Code of Conduct for “Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to ‘abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings during an International Match'”.The incident occurred in the 21st over of Pakistan’s innings in the third ODI when Babar hit the stumps with his bat before leaving the crease following his dismissal.It was Babar’s first offence in 24 months and a demerit point has been added to his disciplinary record, the ICC said. In the third ODI vs Sri Lanka, Babar scored 34 runs in 52 balls and was dismissed by Jeffrey Vandersay in 21st over.Pakistan completed a 3-0 series sweep of Sri Lanka with a clinical six-wicket victory in their third and final ODI on Sunday with 32 balls remaining.Babar played a lead role with the bat, scoring 165 runs – most in the series – which included a record 20th ODI ton.Babar broke a streak of 807 days and 83 international innings without a century last week when he scored a hundred against Sri Lanka in the ODI series in Rawalpindi.
