Shenzhen sets travel record as rail station handles 116 million trips in 11 months

Shenzhen’s main railway station handled a record 116.6 million passengers in the first 11 months of 2025, as China’s major cities continue to see a boom in rail ridership and travel between Hong Kong and mainland China picks up steam.

The total passenger flow at Shenzhen North Railway Station between January and November was up 8.8 per cent compared with the same period last year, according to data from China State Railway Group cited by local media.

Shenzhen North is one of the two largest high-speed rail hubs in China’s southern Guangdong province and is also one of the mainland stations that connects with Hong Kong’s West Kowloon terminus.

The 116 million figure is more than six times higher than Shenzhen’s registered population and equivalent to the total number of passengers that have ridden the Hong Kong section of the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong High-speed Railway since it opened seven years ago.

Shenzhen North set a single-day record for departures on October 1, the first day of the weeklong National Day public holiday, when it saw off nearly 400,000 passengers. It also set a new single-day record for arrivals on February 5, when 343,000 people flowed back into the city after the end of the Lunar New Year holiday.

The 11-platform station now operates at far beyond its optimal capacity on a regular basis as Shenzhen’s economy grows and China’s high-speed rail network continues to expand. The most popular destinations for rail passengers from Shenzhen North include Guangzhou, Changsha, Wuhan, Chengdu, Chongqing and Shanghai.

Shenzhen’s main airport, Baoan International Airport, has also seen record passenger flows in 2025. About 61.5 million passengers had already passed through the airport so far this year as of December 5, more than the total for the whole of 2024.
