India records highest-ever monthly EV sales in July as retail registrations jump 66%

Electric vehicle retail sales touched a record 3.27 lakh units in July 2026, with EVs accounting for nearly one in every eight vehicles sold in India, according to FADA.

India recorded its highest-ever monthly electric vehicle (EV) retail sales in July 2026, with registrations surging 66 per cent year-on-year to 3,27,901 units, highlighting the rapid acceleration of the country’s transition towards electric mobility.

According to the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), electric vehicles accounted for nearly one in every eight vehicles retailed during the month, reflecting growing consumer acceptance across vehicle segments.

FADA Vice President Sai Giridhar said the July performance marked a milestone for the Indian EV market, adding that no previous month had witnessed such high electric vehicle retail sales.

The two-wheeler segment led the momentum, crossing the two lakh-unit mark for the first time. Electric two-wheelers captured an 11.2 per cent market share in July, up from 10.6 per cent in June and 7.7 per cent in the corresponding month last year.

Electric three-wheelers further strengthened their dominance, with EVs accounting for 65.1 per cent of total retail sales in the category, compared with 62.7 per cent in June and 60.3 per cent a year earlier. Giridhar said electric three-wheelers have effectively become the default choice rather than an alternative.

Commercial vehicles also witnessed a sharp rise in electrification, with EV penetration reaching a record 3.57 per cent market share, more than double the 1.65 per cent recorded in July 2025. FADA attributed the growth to fleet operators increasingly moving from pilot projects to large-scale procurement.

Passenger electric vehicles posted an 83 per cent year-on-year increase in retail sales while maintaining a 7.9 per cent market share, unchanged from June but significantly higher than the 5.1 per cent share recorded a year ago. FADA, however, noted that supply constraints for high-demand models continue to limit faster growth and urged automakers to address shortages ahead of the festive season.

The association also pointed to global developments that could further support EV adoption. It said renewed disruptions in West Asia could push crude oil prices higher, potentially reviving inflationary pressures and encouraging more consumers to switch to electric vehicles.

“The EV transition has stopped being a forecast. It is now a showroom reality, and Bharat is driving it,” Giridhar said, underscoring the broad-based expansion of EV adoption across the country.
