Will take responsibility of kin of lynched Hindu worker: Dhaka

Facing criticism from different quarters and international condemnation over targetting of minority communities, the Muhammad Yunus-led interim govt has announced the state will take responsibility of the family of the Hindu worker – Dipu Chandra Das – who was lynched on blasphemy charges last week and asserted it is taking “the highest efforts for the protection of minorities”.The killing of Das in Mymensigh, amid a series of attacks on Hindus since the Sheikh Hasina govt’s collapse last year and Yunus taking charge as chief adviser, has further strained India-Bangladesh ties. On behalf of the interim govt, education adviser C R Abrar, after visiting Das’s family on Tuesday, announced the state will take responsibility of the family, providing it financial as well as welfare assistance.

On Wednesday, the chief adviser’s office said the assistance will be provided to the family by authorities in the “coming period”. “We have strongly condemned this (the lynching) and 12 people have been arrested, so far, on the basis of videos. We are giving the highest efforts for the protection of minority,” chief adviser’s press secretary Shafiqul Alam told reporters.The govt has said allegations, rumours, or differences of belief can never excuse violence, and no individual has the right to take the law into their own hands. “We remain fully committed to ensuring the safety, dignity, and equal protection of all citizens, regardless of religion, ethnicity, or background,” the government added.
