NEW DELHI: India bowling coach Morne Morkel has shared promising updates on Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer’s recoveries ahead of the ODI series opener against South Africa in Ranchi on November 30. “I spoke to Shubman two days ago just to check in with him, and he’s recovering well, so that’s pleasing to hear,” Morkel said. “Shreyas has also started his rehab, which is great. So yeah, we’re looking forward to welcoming them back into the squad. The good thing is they’re healthy and starting their preparation on their way back into the team,” the bowling coach said.Gill suffered a neck injury during the first Test in Kolkata after attempting a sweep against Simon Harmer, forcing him out of both the Test series and the ODIs. Iyer’s injury was more serious — an abdominal issue sustained while attempting a diving catch against Australia earlier this year, which resulted in internal bleeding and a lacerated spleen that required surgery in Sydney. While his rehab has commenced, his full return remains some time away.Morkel also reflected on South Africa’s recent dominance following their 2-0 Test series sweep over India.“A change into coloured clothing and a change of ball brings different energy. But South Africa have momentum, and a confident Protea side is dangerous. For us, it’s important to start well over the next week or two and put the last couple of weeks behind us,” he said. The opening ODI match of the three-match series will be played in Ranchi on Sunday.
