Veteran India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin found himself at the centre of another dramatic moment in the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) on Saturday. Playing for Dindigul Dragons against Siechem Madurai Panthers, Ashwin’s one misjudged throw snowballed into a comedy of errors, resulting in not one but three missed run-out opportunities on the same delivery. The incident unfolded on the second-last ball of Madurai’s innings. Batter Gurjapneet Singh drove the ball to extra cover where Ashwin was fielding. Spotting a run-out chance, Ashwin quickly fired a throw to the non-striker’s end but it wasn’t collected cleanly. Sensing the fumble, the batters grabbed another run. The chaos continued as another throw from short mid-wicket towards the striker’s end also went astray, allowing the pair to scamper through for a third run. A final attempt from short third man missed its mark too, though this time the batters didn’t push their luck further. Ashwin, visibly furious, stood motionless on the field, livid not only with himself but also with his teammates for the sloppy fielding that turned a straightforward single into three runs.
This isn’t Ashwin’s first controversial moment this TNPL season. Earlier, in a match against I Dream Tiruppur Tamizhans, he had a heated exchange with the umpire after being given out lbw — a decision he felt was incorrect as the ball appeared to pitch outside leg. In frustration, he struck his pad with his bat on his way back to the dugout, an act that later earned him a fine. While the triple run-out fiasco had fans in splits online, it’s clear Ashwin expects sharper cricket from his side. With the TNPL heating up, all eyes will be on the experienced campaigner to see how he channels his fiery passion in the games ahead.
