Volkswagen recalls 2.86 million vehicles worldwide over steering risk

Volkswagen says corrosion in a steering-system component could cause a bolt to fracture and potentially lead to steering failure, prompting a precautionary recall covering several VW and Audi models.

German automaker Volkswagen has confirmed a worldwide recall of around 2.86 million vehicles over a potential steering safety risk linked to corrosion, according to Germany’s transport authority KBA, AFP reported.

The recall covers Volkswagen Tiguan, Touran, Golf and Caddy models manufactured between 2013 and 2024, while around 700,000 Audi vehicles built between 2017 and 2024 are also affected, the KBA said.

The issue involves corrosion in a component of the vehicles’ steering system. In some cases, the corrosion could cause a bolt to fracture, potentially resulting in a loss of steering control.

Volkswagen said the problem was identified during quality-control checks and that the recall was being carried out as a precautionary measure.

“There have been no human injuries,” a Volkswagen spokesperson told AFP, adding that drivers could continue using the affected vehicles while waiting for a dealer appointment to replace the affected bolts.

The recall affects vehicles across several markets. In Germany, around 900,000 vehicles are reportedly affected, while Volkswagen Sweden said about 51,000 vehicles in Sweden are covered by the recall, including Volkswagen, Audi and Seat models.

Owners of affected vehicles will be contacted and repairs will be carried out free of charge at authorised workshops.

The recall comes as Volkswagen continues to manage a large global vehicle fleet spanning multiple brands, including Volkswagen, Audi and Seat.
