Renowned singer Kalpana Raghavendar recently grabbed headlines after she was found unconscious at her residence in Rangareddy, Telangana. After reports of suicide attempt surfaced, her daughter Daya Prasad Prabhakar denied ii and said it was only an overdose.
According to a report in On Manorama, Kalpana’s daughter Daya Prasad Prabhakar said that her mother had accidentally overdosed on insomnia tablets due to stress caused by differences with her daughter over her education.
She further said, “There are no problems in our family. Everyone is very happy. Mother is doing well and happy. She will return from the hospital soon. There are no health problems. Mother is a singer. She is also a student. She is doing LLB and PhD. Mother was seeing treatment for insomnia. She is taking medicines prescribed by the doctor. She overdosed on sleeping pills a little. That is what happened and this is not a suicide attempt. Don’t distort the truth. Don’t spread false news”.
Kalpana Raghavendar is daughter of renowned singers T. S. Raghavendra (playback singer, composer and actor) and Sulochana. Her sister Shekinah Shawn is an opera singer. She is trained in Carnatic music under Maduraii T. Srinivasan and earned a Master of Computer Applications degree. She began singing at five and had also appeared in film Punnagai Mannan at Six. Her first recorded song was a family track composed by Salurii Vasurao.
She has sung songs including Yappa Chappa, Oyaa Oyaa, Kodi Parakura Kaalam, Premante Suluvu Kadhura, Joole Joole, Dikkulu Choodaku and Pogiren among others. Kalpana collaborated with legendary composers such as Ilaiyaraaja and A. R. Rahman and performed alongside iconic singers like S. P. Balasubrahmanyam and K. S. Chithra. Although renowned as a playback singer, she is best known for her dynamic live performances.
