‘These Young, Over Smart Ones…’: SC Pulls Up Samay Raina For ‘Making Fun’ Of Obscenity Case Against Him In Canada

In its latest hearing, the Supreme Court came down heavily on comedian Samay Raina for speaking about the controversy over his roast comedy show India’s Got Latent in his stand-up shows in the US and Canada even as he awaited to appear before the Maharashtra Cyber, a cyber and information security division, in the case of obscenity that is under investigation by the Mumbai and Guwahati Police.

Podcaster Ranveer Allahbadia and others triggered a massive uproar with his crass remarks about parents and sex on Samay’s web show India’s Got Latent in February. The controversial episode of India’s Got Latent was shot in November but aired later, in February 2025. The constant use of abusive language and perverse comments by Ranveer, Samay, Apoorva Mukhija aka The Rebel Kid, Ashish Chanchalni and Jaspreet Singh landed them in trouble, which is under investigation. Following the uproar, all episodes of India’s Got Latent were also taken down from YouTube and Samay’s app.

Justice Surya Kant indirectly hit at Samay Raina, who is abroad performing for his Smaay Raina Unfiltered tour in US and Canada due to which he failed to appear before the authorities. “One of them went to Canada and spoke about all of this. These young and over smart ones think they know more. Possibly, they do not know the jurisdiction which this court enjoys” Justice Kant observed. “Yes, he went abroad and made fun of this proceeding,” SG Tushar Mehta noted.
