Sugar production drops 14 %

Sugar production between October 1, 2024 and February 28, 2025 touched 219.78 lakh tonne, which is 14 % less than the sugar produced during the same period during the 2023-2024 sugar season.

According to the Indian Sugar and Bio Energy Manufacturers Association, sugar production after diversion for ethanol from October 1, 2023 to February 28, 2024 was 256.16 lakh tonnes.

The Association said that while totally 466 sugar factories were operating as of February 28 last year, only 355 were in operation now. Sugar mills in Maharashtra and Karnataka were wrapping up production for the current season and 141 units had reportedly stopped production. As many as 86 of the 200 factories that started cane crushing this season in Maharashtra and 55 of the 78 mills in Karnataka have stopped production.

Usually, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu produced almost five lakh tonnes of sugar during the special season that would be in June/July.

The sucrose percentage in plant cane across Uttar Pradesh was improving and had reached a level almost the same as last season. This was expected to offset the lower sugar recovery seen in the last five months of the season, the association said in a press statement.
