Ranya Rao Gold Smuggling Case: ‘Slapped Multiple Times, Denied Food,’ Kannada Actress Alleges Custodial Torture



Ranya Rao Gold Smuggling Case Update: The Kannada actress was arrested at the Bengaluru airport for smuggling gold from Dubai last week. The actress had submitted a plea asking for bail, but on Friday, it was rejected by the court over the seriousness of the charges. In the latest development, Ranya has alleged custodial torture by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI). In a petition submitted from Parappana Agrahara Central Prison, she claimed being physically assaulted, slapped multiple times, and denied sleep and food. Not just this, she was also forced to sign blank documents under duress.

In her petition, she further alleged that officers threatened to expose her father’s identity if she refused to comply. The actress has maintained her innocence in the petition, stating that she was falsely implicated to shield other suspects.

The Special Court for Economic Offences, on Friday, denied bail to the actress stating the charges against her were serious. The court presided over by Judge Vishwanath C Gowdar, agreed that the actress should stay in judicial custody. The actress was arrested at Bengaluru’s airport last week smuggling 14.2 kg gold worth ₹12.56 crore in India from Dubai. During a recent questioning session with DRI, the actress admitted to smuggling the gold and said it was her first time and would never do illegal work ever again.

When asked how she smuggled the gold, to this, she shared in detail that the person handed her gold bars in two plastic-covered packets. So she went to the restroom, attached the gold bars to her body and hid the some in jeans and shoes. She even bought crepe bandages and scissors at the airport. The actress told the officials, she learned this trick from YouTube.
