Announcing the general manager’s exit, the team took to X/Twitter and stated, “New Jersey Devils Managing Partner David Blitzer announced today that Tom Fitzgerald will depart the organization.”As per reports, a change in general manager often leads to a broader organizational reset, with incoming leadership typically preferring to appoint their new coaching staff. And with a disappointing season this year, this raises the question about whether Keefe will remain behind the bench or move forward like Fitzgerald.Speaking about the situation, head coach Keefe stated, “It’s not a good feeling to hear the news. Not a better feeling today, frankly. He further added, “I certainly hope to be a part of the solution here. Obviously, they’ve got some decisions to make on who the new general manager and what the leadership of the team looks like. … I’ll be a part of that discussion and evaluation. It’s not something I feel good about with the situation that we’ve put the team in here.”As per reports, Keefe coached the Devils to the playoffs a year ago, bowing out in five games in the first round, also after Hughes was lost for the season following shoulder surgery. However, it is important to note that in seven seasons in the league, this is the first spring Keefe has not taken someone to the playoffs.The Devils’ inconsistent performances and failure to secure a playoff position have led the management to take stringent measures regarding an organizational reset.
