Microsoft has released an app for its Copilot service for Macs. The native Copilot app for macOS works similarly to its Windows app, giving Mac users access to the web-based version of the AI assistant. Users can ask Copilot any questions they would ask any other AI assistant, upload images and files for contextual information, and even generate images or text.
“Your AI companion is now available on macOS. You can upload images, generate images and text, use the shortcut launcher, dark mode, and try Think Deeper,” reads the app description on the App Store.
The Copilot app for macOS comes ahead of Apple ’s major upgrade to Apple Intelligence as part of the iOS 18.4 update in April. Copilot’s new app on macOS supports signing in using an Apple ID, capable of synchronising data with Copilot apps on other platforms signed in with the same account. Microsoft says Mac users can launch the Copilot app through Command + Space — much like the Alt + Space shortcut on Windows.
While the Copilot app supports uploading files and asking questions about them, the ability to summarise them is something Microsoft will roll out later for macOS. Meanwhile, the Copilot apps for iPhone and iPad come with that support. The app also supports history; when connected with a Microsoft account, it will have access to all previous conversations.
The announcement comes days after Microsoft removed the paywall from Copilot Voice and Think Deeper features, allowing users unlimited access. Think Deeper, based on OpenAI’s o1 model, and Copilot Voice were freemium features earlier, needing users to pay after they have exhausted the limit. That means Copilot users on macOS will have unrestricted access to both features.
Microsoft’s new Copilot Mac app is currently available in the US, the UK, and Canada. Alongside, the company has introduced a split screen mode for Copilot’s iPad app.
