Jio IPO draws strong institutional demand: What investors need to know

Jio Platforms raised Rs 8,110 crore from anchor investors ahead of its Rs 30,213-crore IPO, with institutional bids leading the early subscription response

Jio Platforms’ Rs 30,213-crore initial public offering (IPO) opened for subscription on Wednesday after attracting strong demand from domestic and global institutional investors. The issue drew bids for 83 per cent of the shares on offer within the first hour of trading, with qualified institutional buyers (QIBs) leading the early response.

The QIB portion was subscribed 2.86 times by 10 am, according to data reported by CNBC-TV18. The early demand follows a strong anchor investor round, in which Jio Platforms raised Rs 8,109.85 crore from 212 investors ahead of the public issue.

The IPO marks a milestone for Jio Platforms, the telecom and digital services subsidiary of Reliance Industries. At the upper end of the price band, the company is valued at approximately Rs 10.3 lakh crore.

The issue will remain open until October 23, with allotment expected on October 26 and listing tentatively scheduled for October 28 on the BSE and NSE.

Jio IPO: Price band, lot size and key dates

Jio Platforms has set a price band of Rs 1,065 to Rs 1,119 per share. The IPO comprises a fresh issue of 27 crore shares, with no offer-for-sale component. At the upper end of the price band, the issue will raise Rs 30,213 crore.

The company plans to use up to Rs 27,500 crore of the net proceeds to repay or prepay borrowings of its telecom subsidiary, Reliance Jio Infocomm. The remaining proceeds will be used for general corporate purposes.

The proposed debt repayment is expected to reduce the subsidiary’s financing burden and strengthen its balance sheet, while the fresh issue will provide additional capital to the business.

Retail investors can apply for a minimum lot of 12 shares, requiring an investment of Rs 13,428 at the upper end of the price band. Applications can be made in multiples of 12 shares.

Eligible employees are entitled to a discount of Rs 54 per share, subject to the terms of the offering. The issue also includes a reservation for eligible shareholders of Reliance Industries.

Global and domestic investors back the IPO

The anchor book attracted strong interest from global asset managers, sovereign wealth funds, pension funds, domestic mutual funds and insurers.

Among the participating global investment firms were BlackRock, Fidelity Investments, Capital Group, T. Rowe Price, JPMorgan Asset Management, Franklin Templeton and Schroders. Sovereign and public investment institutions included Singapore’s GIC, the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, the Qatar Investment Authority and Norway’s Norges Bank Investment Management.

Domestic participation included mutual fund houses such as SBI Mutual Fund, HDFC Mutual Fund and ICICI Prudential Mutual Fund, alongside other institutional investors.

Jio Platforms allotted shares worth Rs 8,109.85 crore to 212 anchor investors at Rs 1,119 per share, the upper end of the price band. Demand for the anchor book exceeded Rs 2.5 lakh crore, according to reports.

The participation of major domestic and international institutions underscores the scale of investor interest in the offering. The subscription figures will continue to change as bidding progresses through the three-day issue period.

Jio Platforms’ financial performance

Jio Platforms has built a large customer base since entering India’s telecom market in 2016. The company had 533.3 million subscribers as of June 2026, according to figures reported ahead of the IPO.

For the financial year ended March 2026, Jio Platforms reported revenue of Rs 1,46,885 crore, earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) of Rs 76,255 crore and profit after tax of Rs 30,049 crore. Its EBITDA margin stood at 51.91 per cent.

The company’s core business is telecommunications, supported by its wireless subscriber base and growing fixed-broadband operations. It has also expanded into digital services, entertainment and enterprise technology solutions.

Jio is pursuing opportunities in cloud computing, cybersecurity and artificial intelligence-enabled applications. These businesses could provide additional avenues for growth as enterprises and consumers adopt more digital services.

What investors need to know

At an implied valuation of approximately Rs 10.3 lakh crore at the upper end of the price band, Jio Platforms’ IPO gives investors an opportunity to participate in one of India’s largest telecom and digital services businesses.

The company’s subscriber base, revenue, profitability and cash generation are important indicators for investors assessing its business prospects. Its ability to increase average revenue per user (ARPU), monetise 5G investments and expand broadband and enterprise services will also be closely watched.

The planned debt repayment is another key element of the offering. Lower borrowings could reduce financing costs and provide greater flexibility for investment, although the eventual benefit will depend on the amount of debt repaid and the company’s financial performance.

Investors will also be watching developments in telecom tariffs, competition and the contribution of newer digital services to revenue and profits. These factors will help determine how Jio Platforms builds on its existing scale.

The strong anchor book and early institutional demand have set the tone for the IPO’s opening day. Subscription figures over the remaining bidding period will provide a clearer picture of demand across institutional, non-institutional and retail investor categories.
