Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman highlights India’s strong growth, young population, expanding consumption and digital infrastructure as key attractions for global investors.
India is positioning itself as one of the world’s most compelling investment destinations, with Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman highlighting the country’s strong economic growth, demographic advantage and rapidly deepening capital markets during her ongoing nine-day visit to Canada and the US.
Speaking in Toronto, Sitharaman said India today stands as the fastest-growing major economy in the world, arguing that the country offers a combination of scale and structural growth that is difficult for other major economies to match.
“India offers a combination that is difficult to match: scale, sustained growth, a young population, expanding consumption and rapidly deepening capital markets,” Sitharaman said in a post on X.
The finance minister said India’s economic transformation is structural rather than temporary, pointing to rapid urbanisation, the expansion of the middle class and the country’s digital infrastructure as key drivers of new economic opportunities.
“Our digital ecosystem has also dramatically reduced the cost of access and expanded the reach of financial and commercial services,” she said.
Sitharaman’s remarks come as she undertakes a nine-day Canada-US tour, with trade, investment and economic engagement forming a key part of her agenda. Her visit comes at a crucial time as India seeks to strengthen its global economic partnerships, attract investment and expand market access.
The finance minister’s pitch also highlights the growing importance of India’s domestic consumption story. A young population, rising incomes and increasing urbanisation are expected to continue creating demand across sectors ranging from financial services and technology to manufacturing, infrastructure and consumer goods.
India’s digital public infrastructure has emerged as another major pillar of the growth story. The rapid expansion of digital payments and financial services has widened access to formal financial and commercial networks while helping businesses reach consumers at a much larger scale.
Sitharaman is expected to use her engagements in Canada and the US to underline these structural strengths and present India as a long-term destination for global capital.
Her comments come amid India’s broader efforts to diversify trade and investment partnerships and strengthen economic ties with key global markets. For New Delhi, the objective is not only to attract foreign capital but also to position India as a critical part of global supply chains and the next phase of international economic growth.
