A 78-year-old Indian-origin woman was the target of a daring robbery in Brampton, Canada, when she was on her evening walk in the neighborhood. Her son Raghavendra Kumar told the police that his mother does not speak English and when the con woman approached her, she thought it was a neighbor or someone she knew. The stranger bent and touched her feet and then hugged her when the mother was in shock as she was trying to figure out who the stranger was. By then, the stranger placed a fake piece of jewelry around the old woman’s neck, removing her real gold necklace. She also took her gold bangles before fleeing in an SUV.The theft happened on July 28 but Raghavendra spoke out to CTV News now after police in Toronto released footage of a similar incident probably involving the same suspects who targeted his mother.Peel Police told CTV News that they are aware of the two jewelry thefts of a similar pattern but they are yet to make a breakthrough in linking the two.
‘My mother was shivering’
Kumar said his mother only realized what had happened after the suspects had left. “She was shivering,” he said, describing how his mother struggled to walk and was unable to speak for about 30 minutes after returning home.Kumar said his immediate concern was his mother’s health rather than the stolen jewellery.The gold had significant sentimental value for the family. Kumar said his father, who died around 2008, had given the jewellery to his mother when they married in 1971. He said his father was a goldsmith and had made the pieces himself.Kumar estimated that about 110 grams of jewellery was taken, with a raw-metal value of approximately C$20,000.He said his mother used to look forward to those evening walks but after the incident she stopped walking outside.
