Indian-origin man finds 80-year-old neighbour dead in US, shares story on Instagram: ‘I’ll take care of final rites’

An Indian man living in the United States went viral after sharing a heartbreaking account of his elderly neighbour dying alone inside his apartment, calling it a “sad reality” of American life.In an Instagram video, the user, named Sachin Sindhu, said the 80-year-old man, identified only as Shafar, had no family living with him and rarely saw visitors. Sindhu said he was likely the only person who checked in on him regularly.According to Sindhu, he grew worried after not hearing from Shafar for an entire day. Using a spare key, he entered the apartment and found the man lying lifeless on his bed. Police were called and later confirmed the death.Sindhu said the experience left him shaken. He called the incident a stark example of how many older Americans live and die in isolation. He claimed that the deceased had no wife and no children living with him.According to Sindhu, the family structure in the US is weak, with families often living apart and elderly parents left on their own, unlike in India where people generally care for and stay close to their elders.Sindhu added that he informed authorities he would arrange the funeral if no relatives came forward.Instagram users responded with heartfelt messages and condolences.

  • “Sorry to hear this, bro. May his soul rest in peace.”
  • “Nice message, brother… appreciate your feelings.”
  • “In search of gold — money and privacy — we often lose diamonds, our parents and values.”
  • “May his soul rest in peace. He wanted to go without troubling anyone.”
  • “Very sad, but you can’t change the culture.”
