India-New Zealand free trade agreement comes into force, announces commerce ministry

New Zealand will remove tariffs on all Indian goods, while India will eliminate or cut duties on 95% of imports from New Zealand under the trade pact.

India and New Zealand have formally ratified their Free Trade Agreement (FTA), which will come into force on October 20, the commerce ministry said on Monday.

The two countries have completed their respective domestic legal processes for implementing the trade pact and formally exchanged diplomatic notes confirming its ratification, the ministry said.

New Zealand’s Trade and Investment Minister Todd McClay exchanged the formal documents with India’s High Commissioner to New Zealand Muanpuii Saiawi at New Zealand’s Parliament on Monday.

India and New Zealand had signed the FTA on April 27, 2026, describing it as a significant step towards strengthening trade, investment and economic ties between the two countries.

Under the agreement, New Zealand will remove tariffs on all goods imported from India. India, meanwhile, will eliminate or reduce tariffs on 95% of its current imports from New Zealand.
