Hypocrite: Shreya Ghosal Trolled For Crooning Chikni Chameli On Indian Idol 15 Days After Calling The Song An ‘Embarrassment’

Shreya Ghoshal has stirred controversy from her latest statements in an interview. One of the most well-known playback singers in Bollywood, in an interview, Shreya shared that she is ‘embarrassed’ of some of the ‘raunchy’ songs she has lent her voice to and cited Chikni Chameli as an example. However, social media users found her words contrary to her actions as she recently performed the song on an episode of the reality show Indian Idol 15.

Shreya Ghoshal recently appeared for an interview with YouTuber Lily Singh wherein the duo discussed the evolution of music in Bollywood, especially for female artists. In the conversation, the ace playback singer mentioned that some of the songs in her discography, are downright ‘raunchy’ and feel forced even in the storyline and consequently promote objectification of women. She cited Chikni Chameli as an example and shared that it is one of the songs she is ‘embarrassed’ of.

Shreya stressed that there is a ‘difference in between being sexy, sensuous and just making yourself objectified’. She argued that over the years, she has grown ‘conscious’ of her song choices. She reasoned that often she catches young girls singing the songs and repeating the lyrics which are highly ‘inappropriate’ for them. The singer asserted that ‘it is not wrong’ to celebrate sensuality, but there is a line that need not be crossed. Shreya Ghoshal advocated that music and movies are impressionable and suggestive lyrics in songs are not suitable for young children.

The episode of the interview was released on February 25 just a week after an episode of Indian Idol 15 in which Shreya Ghoshal was seen performing Chikni Chameli. The singer appears as a judge on the reality show. A Reddit thread called Bolly Blinds and Gossip shared the video of her singing the song and called out her hypocrisy.

Social media users argued that Shreya Ghoshal said big words about morality but failed to practice it when it came to commercial gains. However, a section of the internet is convinced that Katrina Kaif’s fans have taken offence to Shreya’s statements and are trying to malign her image. Katrina, who appeared in the video of the song Chikni Chameli, has not issued any statement yet.
