'He is on a purple patch': R Ashwin explains why Shubman Gill adapts easily across formats

Former Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin has shared his insights on Shubman Gill’s workload while playing all three formats and endorsed Dhruv Jurel’s potential inclusion in the upcoming Test match against South Africa.Ashwin discussed Gill’s ability to handle playing across all three formats in a recent video on his YouTube channel Ash ki Baat.

No off days as captain Shubman Gill, coach Gautam Gambhir arrive in Kolkata for Test series

“It is slightly easier for Shubman Gill because he is playing all three formats. Obviously, in red-ball it will be challenging. The ball will move. You will have to give respect to the bowler. He needs to work on his defence. Understandable that to make a switch from T20 to Test cricket is not easy. But, having said that, to be in flow is much better than not being in the flow,” Ashwin said.Ashwin acknowledged the performances of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who now only play ODI cricket after retiring from Tests and T20Is.“Credit to Rohit and Virat for the way they performed in the series. Its not easy,” the off-spinner remarked, referring to their performance in the recently concluded ODI series in Australia.Speaking further about Gill playing all formats, Ashwin said, “I think the batting form which Shubman Gill is in, it is easier for him (to play all three formats). He is on a purple patch. As a cricketer he would be itching to play.”Ashwin also commented on wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel’s impressive performance in the unofficial Test match against South Africa A in Bengaluru, where Jurel scored centuries in both innings.Taking to social media platform X, Ashwin wrote, “Dhruv Jurel is making it very hard for the coach and captain to drop him from the Test match coming up. 100’s in both innings of the unofficial test against SA ‘A’.”The Test series against South Africa is set to commence on November 14 at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
