Footballer dies after robbers attack team bus

NEW DELHI: A Ghanaian Premier League footballer, Dominic Frimpong, has died after armed robbers attacked his team while they were returning from an away match on Sunday, according to the Ghana Football Association. The incident shocked the country’s football community and left his club and teammates devastated.The club, Berekum Chelsea FC, said in a statement that “masked men wielding guns and assault rifles” fired on the team bus and forced the players to take cover in the bushes.

The attack reportedly happened around 10:30 pm local time along the Ahyiresu-Kwame Dwumor Sreso road in the Nyinahin District of Ghana’s Ashanti Region.During the chaos, Dominic Frimpong was hit by gunfire. Police said he was rushed to hospital but later died while receiving treatment. The violent robbery also affected others, including a 52-year-old victim. “Another victim, George Owusu Afriyie, 52, was also robbed of 4,500.00 cedis ($408),” the police said in a statement.Authorities confirmed the incident and described it as a criminal attack that led to loss of life and theft. The Ghana Football Association called the event “tragic” and a “huge loss to Berekum Chelsea but also to Ghana football as a whole.”Frimpong, just 20 years old, was seen as a rising talent in Ghanaian football. “Dominic was a promising young talent whose dedication and passion for the game embodied the spirit of our league,” it said in a statement.He had joined Berekum Chelsea FC on loan from Aduana Stars FC earlier this year and had already played 13 matches, scoring two goals. His sudden death has left the local football community mourning a young career cut short in a violent and unexpected tragedy.
