South Korean actress Kang Myung Joo, known for her character in Extraordinary Attorney Woo, has passed away at 54 after battling cancer for a long time. The news was confirmed by her daughter, actress Park Se Young. Following the announcement, tributes from fans and the entertainment industry started pouring on social media.
As per reports by South Korean media outlet, the actress succumbed to a painful battle against cancer at 5:52 p.m. KST on February 27. The funeral service for the actress is taking place at Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital, with her burial scheduled for March 2. Her husband, actor Park Yun Hee, and their daughters, including actress Park Se Young, mourn her loss.
Park Se Young announced her mother’s passing in an emotional social media post, saying, “My mom left us yesterday afternoon. We would appreciate it if you could remember the stage she loved and the moments she shone.”
Kang Myung Joo was a talented actress who excelled in both theatre and television. She began her career in 1992 with the experimental theatre troupe Kooni, Nara, and went on to perform in acclaimed plays such as Hamlet, Circle of Lite, and Coriolanus. Over her three-decade career, she built a strong reputation for her acting skills.
In 2022, Kang Myung Joo got viral for her portrayal of a judge in the popular drama Extraordinary Attorney Woo, a role that brought her critical praise and introduced her to a new audience. Her final television appearance was reportedly in the 2024 MBC series Wonderful World, starring Kim Nam Joo and Cha Eunwoo.
