A planned Chapel Hill appearance by controversial influencer Clavicular has been canceled after growing community opposition and calls for a protest. The 20-year-old internet personality, whose real name is Braden Peters, had been scheduled to appear at Still Life on East Franklin Street on August 30. The decision came just days after his appearance at a Raleigh nightclub drew attention across the Triangle.
Why the Clavicular event was canceled in Chapel Hill
Still Life announced the cancellation on Saturday, saying the decision followed feedback from the community. The club also made its priority clear, stating, “safety of our customers, staff and community will always come first.”The cancellation came as flyers appeared around downtown Chapel Hill urging people to protest Peters’ planned appearance. His visit was part of what he has described as a college tour, with stops planned around the country.The controversy surrounding Clavicular goes well beyond his online persona. Peters has built a large audience on TikTok, Instagram and Kick by promoting looksmaxxing, an internet trend centered on changing one’s appearance to become more attractive.Some of the methods associated with Peters have been extreme. His online content has included claims and demonstrations involving cosmetic enhancement, so-called bonesmashing and drug use. His image has helped him attract millions of followers, but it has also made him a deeply divisive figure.Peters has also been linked to creators associated with the manosphere and has faced criticism over offensive language used during livestreams.His public profile has been accompanied by legal and personal controversies as well. He was arrested in Florida in March on battery charges that were later dropped. In April, he was hospitalized following an apparent overdose that was reportedly captured on livestream.He is also facing a civil lawsuit involving an allegation of sexual battery against a minor. The allegations in that case have not been established as fact.
Clavicular’s Raleigh appearance adds to Triangle controversy
The Chapel Hill cancellation came only two days after Peters appeared at The Village nightclub on Glenwood Avenue in Raleigh on August 28.That appearance had already generated discussion in the local community. Milk Man Promotions, which promoted the Raleigh event, said it worked with the Raleigh Police Department to arrange additional officers for the appearance.The promoter’s owner, identified as “JZ,” defended the decision to host Peters and dismissed concerns about the controversy surrounding him.“There is no such thing as bad publicity,” Milk Man Promotions owner “JZ” told McLaughlin. “If you’re upset, it’s not for everybody. If you don’t want to see Clav, don’t come.”That stance contrasts sharply with the decision made by Still Life in Chapel Hill. While the Raleigh event went ahead, the Chapel Hill club ultimately chose to cancel after hearing from members of the community.The contrasting responses highlight the difficult position venues can face when booking internet personalities whose large audiences can bring attention, while their histories and online conduct can also trigger strong opposition.For now, Peters’ Triangle tour has already produced two very different outcomes. His Raleigh appearance moved forward with additional security, while the planned Chapel Hill event was scrapped before it could take place. The cancellation shows that his growing online fame does not necessarily translate into an easy welcome at every venue.
