Bangladesh reported another lynching of a man named Amrit Mondal over an extortion allegation, only days after the killing of worker Dipu Chandra Das that sparked widespread criticism over the lack of safety to the minority community in the South Asian nation.Police said they rushed to the spot after receiving information and found Mondal, also known as Samrat, in a critical condition, The Daily Star reported. He was taken to hospital where the doctors declared him dead.
Samrat’s body was later sent to the Rajbari Sadar Hospital morgue for post-mortem examination. According to the authorities, Samrat had at least two cases registered against him at Pangsha Police Station, including a murder case.According to locals, Samrat had formed a criminal gang and had long been involved in extortion and other criminal activities. After remaining in hiding in India for a long time, he recently returned home and allegedly demanded extortion money from Shahidul Islam, a resident of the village.Mondal’s associate Mohammad Selim has been arrested and a pistol and a one-shooter gun has been recovered from his possession.Last night, Samrat and members of his group went to Shahidul’s house to collect the money. There is no space for such violence in new Bangladesh. The perpetrators of this heinous crime will not be spared,” a statement posted on X said.The killings come amid ongoing unrest in the country and heightened concern over attacks on religious minorities and media institutions.
