Asian Boxing Championships: Vishvanath Suresh clinches gold as India end campaign with 16 medals

NEW DELHI: India ended the Asian Boxing Championships 2026 on a high, finishing second overall but with the highest number of total medals. Leading the charge was young boxer Vishvanath Suresh, who won gold in the men’s 50kg category after defeating Japan’s Daichi Iwai with a clear 5:0 verdict in the final. His performance stood out throughout the tournament, especially as he defeated a world number one on the way, showing confidence and maturity beyond his experience.

Another strong contribution came from Sachin, who secured a silver medal after a tough fight, adding to India’s medal tally and highlighting the men’s team’s solid effort.In total, India won 16 medals, just one gold short of table-toppers Kazakhstan, marking a highly successful campaign.

Women lead the charge

India’s women’s boxing team played a major role in this success, finishing at the top of the medal standings with 10 medals. Gold medal winners included Minakshi, Preeti, Priya, and Arundhati, all of whom dominated their categories. Silver medals from Jaismine and Alfiyan Pathan, along with four bronze medals, showed the team’s consistency across divisions.

A promising future

Boxing Federation of India President Ajay Singh praised the team’s effort. As quoted by IANS, he said, “This has been a remarkable campaign for Indian boxing… What stands out is the depth of talent coming through–despite changes from the previous World Championships, this team has shown tremendous character and promise while claiming titles against some of the continent’s toughest fighters. “We are seeing a new wave of upcoming talent and multiple medal contenders stepping up on the big stage, which bodes extremely well for the future of Indian boxing.”
